About Remedial Massage
Remedial Massage is a massage technique which aims to support a person experiencing tight, tense or knotted muscles. It is used in a number of situations to address muscle, ligament and tendon problems.
What is Remedial Massage?
When a person experiences pain or spasms in the muscles the centre of the pain will often come from the site of the spasm of the muscle. However the reason for why the muscle has spasmed is often elsewhere in the body. Treating the whole body, a remedial massage therapist can trace the physical discomfort back to where it started. This supports you to look at and heal the original physical issue as well as finding support with the physical symptoms you are experiencing.
Everything in the body is connected and related and if one part is injured it will in turn affect the whole body. For example: a person with an injured knee may then start to favour the other leg which will throw out the muscles in the hip and back, leading to back ache. The tightening of these muscles may then cause an imbalance affecting the neck muscles which may then cause a headache. So while a client may complain of persistent headaches, what may be the primary physical cause of the problem in the case outlined, is in fact a knee injury. While particular injuries are addressed, everything in the body is connected and related. A remedial massage looks to go beyond the immediate issues and offers a balanced treatment for the whole body. A remedial massage therapist is a trained complementary health practitioner who delivers an assessment of what is causing the problem and how to treat it.
This involves a thorough evaluation of what is right for an individual’s particular recovery. The treatment is performed using a cream with oil that specially targets the affected areas. Depending on the injury, different massage techniques, such as deep tissue or firm and gentle, will be favoured. Specific techniques are used not only to ease pain, but to remove the source of the problem by encouraging the body’s own healing process.

Does Remedial Massage Hurt? Remedial Massage should not hurt when it is applied, and if you are experiencing pain from the application of the massage please let the massage therapist know immediately. Many people come to remedial massage because they are in pain from tension or injury, for this reason we apply the massage with a great amount of tenderness and care for the client. Generally speaking the massage will begin gently and then become firmer.
At all times you can communicate with the massage therapist if you would like more or less pressure to be applied. However, please note while Innermost Harmony Massage Therapists can give you a very firm massage they do not apply excessive force because this will cause your body to recoil and go into more tension and no true healing can occur. This does not mean that the massage does not reach the deeper layers of tissue, many techniques are applied to areas where there is hardness that support the area to become more supple and for the body to release the held tension.
Does Remedial Massage Work?
Remedial massages can support a variety of different physical injuries or problems based on their severity. If there is tissue damage, a remedial massage can stimulate circulation. For muscular injuries, the treatment can stabilise joint mobility and stretch out tight muscles. Most commonly, remedial massages can be supportive for health issues such as:
- Back Pain
- Neck Pain
- Scoliosis
- Plantar Fasciitis

Is Remedial Massage a form of Deep Tissue Massage?
Remedial Massage and Deep Tissue Massage are often confused but they differ greatly. A fully qualified remedial massage therapist requires an extensive study and knowledge of the body so that they can assess issues and injuries in their clients. While the deeper layer of the muscles can be engaged in Remedial Massage this is not done through excessive force but through an understanding of how to gently but firmly engage the deeper layers of muscle.
