About Pregnancy Massage

Lower back pain and swollen feet? As the body changes during pregnancy many women experience general aches and pains. The relaxing effect of a nurturing and gentle massage can assist with these symptoms.

Is it safe to have a massage while pregnant? While gentle massage is generally considered safe, especially where administered by a trained professional, always ensure your suitability for massage by visiting your GP. For more information see our Q&A.

Many women have found that pregnancy massage can be a helpful addition for prenatal care. A pregnancy massage can involve the use of many different techniques, but Innermost Harmony favours a gentle approach. The hands-on therapy focuses on sore muscles and the soft tissues of the body. The treatment can support to reduce stress, release tension and contribute to general health and well-being. The massage will be personalised depending on the individual needs of the client.

Evaluation will be based on the stage of pregnancy, your medical history and current symptoms. The therapist will discuss what you would like to achieve from your sessions and begin developing a treatment plan. It is essential to seek treatment from qualified practitioners.

At Innermost Harmony, our therapists are highly trained and dedicated to guarantee a safe experience. However, it is always important to check with your doctor before seeking any additional treatment during pregnancy.

Benefits of Massage
for Pregnant Women

At Innermost Harmony we offer a range of therapeutic services including pregnancy massage and spa treatment. The benefits of this service can assist with improving sleep, reduction of anxiety and decreases in stress. It may provide emotional support and assist with the relief of pain during pregnancy.

Circulation can be affected by pressure of the uterus on major blood vessels, causing parts of the body to become swollen. The massage may provide relief from these symptoms.

Innermost Harmony Therapist’s do not ever work on the pregnant woman’s abdomen but on the peripheral areas and the parts of the back that are being affected by the pressures associated with pregnancy.

Pressure can also affect the pelvis and lower back, causing unnecessary discomfort and tension. Particularly, this tension contributes to the swelling of the legs, straining the surrounding nerves, such as the sciatica.

Several studies indicate the massage regulates stress hormones, which alleviates symptoms of anxiety. This can greatly improve sleeping habits, mental clarity and mood. Prenatal massage can help with:

  • Lower Back Pain
  • Aches (Legs & Feet)
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep
  • Exhaustion

How it Works

After a treatment plan has been discussed and agreed upon, you will be given privacy to undress and a warm towel to cover yourself. A massage table will be set up and the practitioner will demonstrate the safest position for you to lay down.

The first session will be generally scheduled for 70 minutes. Ongoing appointments will be arranged for 60 minutes, although can be designated for 30, 40 or 90 minutes depending on your availability.

The massage itself will be based on the needs you have expressed within your treatment plan and will be used to support your personal comfort. You won’t be asked to lie in a position that makes you feel uncomfortable or have any treatment technique that you indicate you do not want.

Depending on your circumstances, a pregnancy massage can focus on the whole body (excluding the abdomen) or the specific areas that are causing discomfort. These include:

  • The Back
  • Head, Face & Neck
  • Hands, Arms & Shoulders
  • Feet & Lower Legs
  • Calves & Thighs
